Job Description

Coin Metrics is recruiting a Dev Ops Engineer to manage and improve our cloud and bare metal infrastructure and database architecture, development operations, and data quality assurance and control processes. Join a fast-paced startup pioneering novel metrics, data products, and insights surrounding the economics, markets, usage, health, and other aspects of public cryptocurrency blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum and other crypto networks. Location: Boston-area preferred, remote (EST) also considered

Responsibilities

In this role, you will have responsibility to

  • Continuously develop systems and automation to improve the scalability, availability, reliability, and business value of our data products
  • Build, manage, and supervise monitoring systems and processes to ensure uptime and availability of our full nodes, databases and software daemons
  • Build internal and client-facing tools/dashboards to give clients visibility into the health of their data feeds
  • Work within and pioneer new standards for development operations
  • Work across all stages of a data product life cycle
  • Document infrastructure and design plans, decisions, and rationale
  • Coordinate and communicate with technical and non-technical peers
  • Work with quality engineering in the development and execution of quality assurance and control procedures

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or relevant work experience
  • Experience with Linux on both cloud and bare metal servers
  • 3+ years building and running systems for high availability Internet-facing services
  • Experience with administering large PostgreSQL instances
  • Experience with Docker, Docker Swarm, overlay networks
  • Experience with Ansible
  • Familiarity with cloud hosting services (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, Hetzner Cloud)
  • Understanding of reverse proxying/load balancing (e.g. nginx, Cloudflare)
  • Experience with metric collection/monitoring systems (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Experience with blockchain-related tech (e.g., management of full nodes) is not required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field, or relevant work experience
  • 5+ years experience building and running systems for high availability Internet-facing or preferably cloud-based services
  • Experience with Gitlab CI (writing and using CI/CD configs)
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes
  • Experience with Google BigQuery

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop Coin Metrics’ extensive market data collection infrastructure: connect to new exchanges and other data sources, advance realtime collection techniques
  • Dramatically expand test coverage and reliability of market data scraping applications
  • Participate in the design of data storage and queuing solutions
  • Work together with DevOps engineers to automate deployment and monitoring of market data applications
  • Collect data from a variety of sources: Github, Twitter, Reddit, cryptocurrency forums
  • If desired, contribute to on-chain data pipeline

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • Experience with Unix-based operating systems (especially Linux)
  • Deep knowledge of Python 3
  • Solid understanding of multithreading and asynchronous programming
  • Experience with large relational databases (preferably PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with HTTP and WebSocket APIs
  • Strong sense of ownership, entrepreneurial spirit, and/or startup-like experience, capable of driving towards solutions independently while seeking feedback when appropriate
  • Required: strong attention to detail with capability to write tests and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics or other STEM fields
  • Experience with scraping large amounts of data from the web
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Kotlin and/or Haskell
  • Strong curiosity and passion for decentralized economies
  • Experience with financial market data, market data feeds (e.g. FIX protocol) and related products and back end systems
  • Knowledge of blockchain and related networks and their data structures

Responsibilities

Title and responsibilities will be commensurate with experience but may include the following:

  • Develop methods (manually or automated) to parse, process, or analyze large market (or network) data sets
  • Propose and execute manual or automated tests based on sound statistical methods to identify data issues, document and log test cases and results, follow issues through to resolution, verify resolution, and propose new tests to discover re-occurrences
  • Work with Development to develop and implement testing processes or programs
  • Develop innovative statistical methodologies and data products
  • Backtest prediction models or investment strategies, find time-delayed correlations between assets, discover unique alerts or signals, and contribute to publications, manuscripts, or documentation
  • Maintain dictionaries of calculation or algorithmic methods for metrics or processes
  • Work with Development to create custom simple or embedded analytical tools, dashboards, or reports
  • Work with external clients (such as financial institutions) or vendors (such as exchanges)to solve problems, acquire data, and improve relationships

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Finance, Mathematics, or related field, or relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with financial terms and products and experience working with financial data across the above functions
  • Experience developing data tools or programs using languages such as Python, R, or similar languages
  • Experience developing methods and programs to parse, process, analyze, and comprehend big data sets
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong curiosity and passion for decentralized economies / decentralized finance
  • Strong sense of ownership, entrepreneurial spirit, and/or startup-like experience, capable of driving towards solutions independently while seeking feedback when appropriate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with FIX protocol, REST and WebSocket APIs
  • 3+ years experience parsing, processing, analyzing or testing financial data in a data science or quant role
  • Bonus: knowledge of blockchain and related networks and their data structures
